Every choice tells a story. We uncover it.

We design and conduct palatability studies of pet food and snacks, as well as interaction experience evaluations with toys in dogs and cats.

Inspired by the bond that unites us

I am Gabriela Barrera, Founder and CEO of Catadogers. I hold a PhD in Psychology, specializing in animal behavior, learning, and cognition.

With over 15 years of experience in scientific research, I now develop palatability studies, product testing, and behavioral analysis in dogs and cats, applying rigorous methodologies that turn their choices into reliable data—helping us better understand them and design more conscious solutions.

What We Do

Applied research in animal behavior, palatability, and experience

We conduct palatability studies and evaluate how dogs and cats interact with toys through direct behavioural observation. We identify indicators of acceptance, preference, and behavioural responses related to sensory perception, generating objective data from the animal’s perspective, complemented by pet parent reports.

Palatability Studies

Palatability refers to the pleasurable sensations generated by attributes such as aroma, taste, and texture in a food or snack. To evaluate it, we apply two standardized tests: the acceptance test, which determines whether the product is consumed or rejected, and the preference test, in which the animal chooses between different options. In addition, we analyze the level of enjoyment during consumption, allowing us to understand not only whether the product is liked, but also the quality of the experience it provides.

Toy and Product Testing

How can we know if a dog or cat truly likes a toy designed specifically for them? The wide variability of preferences found in both canine and feline species makes these studies a fascinating challenge for those of us working in cognition and behavior evaluation. We use innovative assessment protocols based on scientific evidence in animal behavior, cognition, and emotions, with the main goal of adapting and improving the experience that dogs and cats have with toys and products designed exclusively for them.

Behavioral and Cognitive Studies

Do dogs and cats feel empathy? Do they have long-term memory or a sense of time? These and many other questions have been scientifically studied for decades. Since the late 1990s, research on cognition and behavior in dogs—and more recently in cats—has grown significantly. Understanding how they perceive their environment, respond to stimuli, and make decisions allows us to better understand their abilities and apply that knowledge to the development of products that enhance their welfare and quality of life.

Studies on the Human–Pet Bond

Exploring the complexities of the bond between humans and dogs/cats involves understanding their distinctive traits and the potential development of mutual attachment. From research showing how dogs interpret our emotions by analyzing human facial expressions, to studies suggesting that cats’ purring may have calming effects on humans, a fascinating path of discovery unfolds. By unraveling these questions through scientific study, we gain a deeper understanding of the unique dynamics that form between these species and us.
